讲座摘要：

Abstract: Empirical economic research, while focusing on data analysis, is often based on economic models. Structural research seeks to estimate model parameters, and thus necessarily starts with well specified economic models. Even non-structural research, such as purely descriptive analysis or studies designed to identify a reduced-form causal relationship, can also benefit from the guidance of a rigorous economic model. In non-structural research, a model can help highlight the importance of the data analysis, generate testable hypotheses, give a meaning to the estimated coefficients, interpret the empirical results, and clarify the mechanisms behind the results. Drawing from recent literature in urban and regional economics, this lecture will illustrate the different roles of economic models in empirical research. It is argued that good modeling skills not only help strengthen the depth but also the breadth of one’s empirical research. Therefore, a young scholar, even without any intention to do theoretical research, should get familiar with standard modeling techniques.

张俊富，约翰·霍普金斯大学博士，现为美国克拉克大学经济系教授，博士研究生项目主任，中国留美经济学会会长（ 2019-2020）。

张俊富教授主要研究领域为城市经济学和劳动经济学，研究兴趣包括中国的城市化和区域发展、企业家才能与就业创造、高科技产业集聚、种族居住隔离等，研究成果发表在 Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Urban Economics, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Regional Science, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, China Economic Review, Small Business Economics等学术期刊。
